Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV named Plug-In Hybrid of the Year at the 2024 What Car? Awards

We at Chris Allen Garages are thrilled to share some exciting news from the automotive world! The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV has been crowned the Plug-In Hybrid of the Year at the prestigious 2024 What Car? Awards. This groundbreaking vehicle, which broadens Mazda's electrified lineup alongside the pure electric MX-30, is now available at UK dealerships, including ours.

A New Era of Driving: The R-EV's Unique Approach

The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV represents a novel take on the plug-in hybrid concept. It features a 17.8kWh battery, providing a 53-mile range purely on electric power. What sets it apart is Mazda's innovative use of rotary engine technology. The new 830cc single-rotor petrol engine serves as a generator, extending the vehicle's range without the typical anxieties associated with electric vehicles. This means the MX-30 R-EV is always powered by its electric motor, offering a smooth, seamless electric driving experience.

Steve Huntingford, Editor at What Car?, praised the model for its enjoyable handling, sophisticated interior, user-friendly infotainment system, and efficient petrol usage. He also noted its appeal as both a company and private vehicle.

Mazda's Rotary Expertise: Half a Century and Beyond

Mazda's more than 50 years of rotary engine development shines in the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. The compact and lightweight rotary engine, paired with a high-output motor and generator, achieves a combined range of over 400 miles. It's a testament to Mazda's commitment to innovative, environmentally friendly technology.

The MX-30 R-EV: Exclusivity and Flexibility

The MX-30 R-EV is compatible with both AC and rapid DC charging, providing convenience and flexibility. It offers three drive modes – Normal, EV, and Charge – to suit various driving needs. With a 125KW/170ps output, it even surpasses the acceleration of the fully electric MX-30.

Available in Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Makoto grades, each version of the e-Skyactiv R-EV features unique design elements, including rotor badges and distinct wheels, setting it apart from its BEV counterpart.

A Choice for Every Driver

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director at Mazda Motors UK, expressed his delight at the MX-30 R-EV's recognition. He highlighted the car's unique technological approach and flexibility, catering to customers who desire an electric car for daily use with the capability for longer journeys. Mazda offers both the pure electric and R-EV versions, ensuring a choice for every need.

A Legacy Continued: The Revival of the Rotary Engine

Mazda's history with rotary engines is rich, producing over 2 million units since 1967. The MX-30 R-EV introduces the new 8C rotary engine, a compact, efficient power generator that fits neatly under the bonnet. This innovative use of technology aligns with modern environmental standards and continues Mazda's legacy of pioneering engineering.

A Driving Experience Like No Other

The MX-30 R-EV ensures a driving experience that is both enjoyable and environmentally conscious. Its high output electric motor and rotary generator combine to offer dynamic performance and an engaging drive.
